About the Division of Labor Standards
The Division of Labor Standards currently consists of four sections: Wage and Hour, On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Service, Mine and Cave Safety and Health, and the Workers’ Safety Program.
The Division determines and enforces the Prevailing Wage, administers and enforces Missouri’s Child Labor Law and Missouri’s Minimum Wage Law.
The Division offers a free confidential, consultation service to employers to ensure they comply with federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
The Division inspects mine and cave sites, trains miners in the practice of implementing safe and healthy working habits.
The Division certifies and audits safety consultants, engineers, and programs used by employers.
Meet the Director
In February 2009, Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Director Larry Rebman announced the hiring of Carla Buschjost as the Division of Labor Standards Director.
In this position, Buschjost has executive oversight of Missouri’s minimum wage law, child labor laws, the Missouri Prevailing Wage Law, wages, hours and dismissal rights, the On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program, Workers’ Safety Program, and the Mine and Cave Safety Program. In addition, the Division is responsible for compiling wage surveys and conducting investigations to assure the Prevailing Wage Law is followed. An important role of the Division of Labor Standards is assisting employers and employees obtain correct information regarding their workplace rights and responsibilities.
Buschjost has several years’ experience in executive/management roles. Her most recent employment was with Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 36 where she served as the Director of Marketing. She was responsible for enforcement of the state’s prevailing wages on public projects and public relations, among other duties.
Buschjost attended Lincoln University and classes at the National Labor College—Silver Springs, Md. She is a lifelong resident of Jefferson City, Mo.
