Missouri Labor Department Officials took a strong stance against violators of the state’s labor laws, pledging stricter enforcement during the annual conference of the Missouri State Building and Construction Trades Council at Lake Ozark, Mo., on Oct. 7-8.

 

 

Unemployment Insurance Works to Stabilize Economy

$1.3 Billion Distributed to Missourians thus far in 2009

The Missouri Labor Department announced the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program exceeded $1.3 billion in cumulative stimulus benefit payments and regular state unemployment benefit payments thus far in 2009. These benefit payments provided more than the much needed unemployment assistance to more than 327,247 Missourians throughout the state; they also provided a boost to the local economy.

The Missouri Labor Department’s duties include ensuring that the state's labor laws are followed, and providing wage protection for workers. In addition, the Department ensures workers are paid the correct wages for the work they perform.

Gov. Nixon makes Technology Education Available for Thousands of Missourians

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon assists Bernice Taylor in looking for a job in the health care field while touring the St. Louis Central Career Center. On Nov. 2, Missouri became one of the first seven states participating in Microsoft Elevate America, which the company initially launched in February 2009. Through this program, Missouri will receive 24,750 vouchers for e-learning and certification program to be distributed across the state - at no cost to Missourians.

Missouri Labor Department Deputy Director, Peter Lyskowski, joined Gov. Jay Nixon on Nov. 2 as the governor announced that thousands of Missourians will have free access to in-demand e-learning and certification programs from Microsoft. The free training is made available through an innovative public-private partnership between the state of Missouri and the technology company.

 

 

State Board of Mediation Appointments Announced

Gov. Jay Nixon recently announced two appointments to the State Board of Mediation. Peggy Cochran of Rocky Mount, fills a post representing organized labor, and Emily Martin, of St. Louis, fills a post representing the employers of labor to the board. The appointments will be subject to Senate confirmation when it re-convenes in January.

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office issued a press release stating that Attorney General Chris Koster has obtained a consent judgment against Advantage Telecom, Inc., for alleged violations of Missouri's Prevailing Wage Law.

On Oct. 27, Labor Department Director, Larry Rebman, spoke to the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association during its labor roundtable in Lenexa, Kan.  Rebman provided the Association details on Missouri’s Minimum Wage Law as it pertains to tipped employees.
