Youth Employment For Parents
Home-Schooled and Private-Schooled Youth
Parents who home-school or send their children to private school are required to fill out Work certificates for their working child. Missouri law allows parents who home-school their children to issue work certificates. Missouri law also allows the principal, or their designee, of private schools to issue work certificates. However, the public superintendent of the school district in which the child resides may revoke a work certificate issued by a public or private school principal, if that is deemed to be in the best interest of the child.
Parents as Employers
Missouri Child Labor Laws apply even when a youth works under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian. The only exemption from the law is when the business is owned by the parent or legal guardian and the child remains under the direct control of the parent or legal guardian. If the parent or legal guardian is simply a supervisor, the law still applies.
Things parents should know before the job starts to protect their children:
- Name of your child’s employer
- Potential Hazards (Please report unsafe working conditions to the Division)
- Hours they are asked to work.
- Type of work your child will be doing.
- Training they will need or receive
- If the employer stresses safety on the job
- If the employer provides Workers’ Compensation Insurance and if so, who their carrier is
- Will the child be given breaks.
