On-Site Receives National Safety Consultation Achievement Recognition Award

On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program

The Missouri Department of Labor’s Division of Labor Standards recently received a national award from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for the creation of the mobile Hazard Lab training exhibit.

OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Achievement Recognition (OSCAR) award recognizes state consultation programs each year for outstanding achievements connected with a special project that was not part of the Consultation Annual Project Plan. Missouri was one of three states to receive this year’s award, along with Indiana and Massachusetts.

“The Department strives to meet the needs of both businesses and workers,” said Julie Gibson, Acting Department Director. “By helping businesses recognize and correct workplace hazards, employees gain a safer working environment while businesses potentially lower workers’ compensation rates.”

The Hazard Lab is designed to educate small businesses and workers on how to identify workplace safety and health hazards. The exhibit includes electrical hazards, machine guarding, hazard communication, compressed air, welding in confined spaces, oxygen-fuel cutting, and forklifts. The exhibit also features construction hazards focusing on scaffolding and construction work zone safety. After completing the walkthrough of the lab, a presentation is provided to discuss each hazard found in the lab, including the identification of specific OSHA standards violated by the observed hazards.

The Hazard Lab exhibit is transported throughout the state to businesses who request the training. Since the beginning of 2013, the Hazard Lab has made five appearances at various venues in Missouri and more than 930 workers have experienced the exhibit since its first appearance in May 2011.

The Missouri On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program offers free and confidential safety and health advice to small and medium-sized businesses across the state, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. Consultants work with employers to identify workplace hazards, provide advice on compliance with OSHA standards, and assist in establishing injury and illness prevention programs. In 2012, Missouri’s On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program conducted more than 650 visits to small business worksites covering 12,350 workers across the state.

Workers' Compensation Conference Recap

Workers' Compensation Conference Recap

The 19th Annual Division of Workers’ Compensation Conference was a big success! The conference was held June 10-11, 2013, at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. More than 430 attendees were able to enjoy a variety of workshops and displays in more than 100 exhibits. Attendees could also earn Continuing Legal Education hours at the conference.

Workshops ranged from reducing injuries, workers’ compensation compensability, using social media for investigating claims, and the aging workforce, to pain management and ergonomic problem solving. 

The annual golf tournament to benefit KIDS’ CHANCE, Inc. of Missouri kicked off the conference and all who participated enjoyed a competitive round of golf for a great cause!

Patrick Venditti, Interim Vice-President/Director of BJC Corporate Health Services, presented the keynote presentation about biopsychosocial issues in the current climate of Workers’ Compensation.

The second day of the conference provided attendees with additional workshops on topics including how experience in safety can help predict and prevent injured workers, new trends in Missouri’s workers’ compensation law, how opioids affect workers’ compensation costs, de-escalating violent behavior in the workplace, and why employees file claims and hire attorneys.

The Missouri Department of Labor works to protect your rights as a worker and depends on you to let us know when those rights are being jeopardized. The Worker Protection Center allows you to connect with our divisions online and take action to get the help you need.

The Worker Protection Center covers a variety of issues in the workplace. Not receiving the proper wages? Learn more about your wage rights and file a complaint if necessary. Do you feel like you’ve been discriminated at work due to your age (40 through 69), race, color, sex, disability, national origin, or ancestry? You can take our complaint assessment to determine if what you experienced was discrimination before filing a complaint. Injured on the job? Use the Worker Protection Center to report your injury to the Department.
