Labor Celebrates Mine Safety with Award Ceremony
Zero Fatality Rate from 2010-2012

St. Louis, MO--The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ Mine and Cave Safety and Health Program partnered with the Missouri Mine Safety Association to recognize Missouri mining companies, smelting companies, and contracting companies, who have made a prominent effort to put safety first in the workplace. The ceremony was held in Festus, Mo, on Thursday, May 2, 2013.

Awards were presented to 11 members of the Association for outstanding workplace safety.  All attendees were recognized collectively for the significant strides made in safety by the mining community, as no miners lost their lives in Missouri mines in 2012. Awards included the following:

  • Bloomsdale Excavating for Safest Contractor
  • Doe Run Co. Buick Resource Recycling Division for Safest Smelter
  • Capital Sand for Safest Dredge
  • Doe Run Co.-Brushy Creek for Safest Large Underground Mine
  • Doe Run Co.-Casteel for Safest Small Underground Mine
  • Doe Run Co.-Buick Mine/Mill for Safest Large Surface Operation
  • Doe Run Co.-Brushy Creek Mine/Mill for Safest Small Surface Operation
  • Specialty Granules Inc.- Safest Large Surface Mine

  • Tower Rock Stone for Safest Large Mill
  • Capital Quarries-Liberty Portable Plant for Safest Small Mill

More than 200 mining companies operate 322 active mines in the state of Missouri. The Department works year-round to protect the industry’s most precious commodity—the workers. In 2012, the program trained 3,471 miners and identified 1,309 hazards in Missouri mines. Up until the recent fatal accident that occurred earlier this year at a St. Charles quarry, Missouri had a zero fatality rate since June 2009.
